Update

I sent Richard an email he replied with a certified letter. The letter has been copied, The black is my original email. The red is Richards reply and the blue is my comment back. Hope this updates everyone until I get another update. If you have any questions you want answered email me or comment on the site, maybe Richard will answer the questions. They read Christie's blog often.

What did the Dr. do for Christie's feet when she went to see him on December 17? Did he do any test and If he did tests what were the results?
He did a standing test and that a botox treatment was need with series of therapies to follow. If there is no results then he recommends a surgery to cut the tendons a certain way that will stop the contracation issue.
That was on the 17Th and I am just now finding out about it , how did the standing test go? Will cuting the tendons help her to walk?
Is Christie still making an effort to speak? If so how many words can she say now. I know she was saying three or four words at FINR.
She is still limited at speech due to her vocal cords. She was evaluated by a doctor who believes she is a candidate for injections in her vocal cords. FCC will schedule an appointment to see the doctor that does the injections to see if he concurs. We heard her speak several words the day after Christmas as we were visiting with her. She just needs encouragement.
Again just now hearing about the injections.
Are the bladder control attempts still being made every two hours and if so how is that going? What about bowel movement control? Are they working with her on that?
They keep her on a schedule for those issues.
When we were there, they never tried the bed pan, nor was she on a schedule, they changed her once the whole time we were there for the whole day. Not every 2 hours as recommended.
Has she gotten her hearing aides yet and if she has do they seem to make a difference in her being able to communicate better?
She has not received her hearing aides yet. They have been ordered. When she does, I am sure communication will be easier.
When will she be getting her new braces for her feet? One of the aides said she hasn't been wearing the braces from FINR but is getting treatments and will be getting new braces for her feet? When we were there this month I noticed her feet have dropped again.
She does wear the braces I bought her, but her tendons are contracting again as previously mentioned so it makes it difficult. She was actually wearing her shoes when we saw her.
Christie was wearing shoes when we where there to, but didn’t wear the braces once the 4 days we where there.
How often does she go to therapy and what kind of therapy is she getting?
She goes everyday from what I have been shown. I met with her occupational therapist on the 26Th.
Christie only had occupational therapy once in the 4 days we were there, and no other therapy.
How often is she checked by a Dr?
Her next appointment is for the neurologist around April 17Th.The last Dr. that checked on her was the 23rd of Dec.
What was the results of that? What was checked? What kind of Doctor?
When is her next swallow test scheduled? Are you going to be able to go with her when she has this test done? Maybe you could ask them to schedule her Dr's appointments on your days off so you could go with her and keep her company and give her a more secure feeling.
Her next swallow study is 3 months from the last one.
Are you going to go with her?
Now that you have finished the paper work will you please give her Dr's, caregivers, nurses, and administrator at the nursing home permission to update me about Christie.
I will continue to update you. FCC has instruction that they can give you information on Christies progress, but I will take care of her medical care and needs.
All they tell me is if she is awake, a sleep or doing O.K. no details.
When do you expect to be able to get her a TTY phone so I can at least call her and talk to her? I don't mind using the regular phone if you will just authorize the nursing facility to install a hearing impaired phone for her to use. If that doesn't work then you can try getting the ones talked about in the blog. I don't want her to feel abandoned because she can't communicate with me and I with her.
I haven’t gotten a date on a TTY phone. Once the doctors fully assess her needs, they will customize her phone.
Christie only has 15 months of recovery time left. How much time do they need? The brain only has 2 years of recovery time after a traumatic brain Injury.
Has she expressed anything that she wants? I know she wanted bunny slippers when she was at FINR and we went and got her a pair of bedroom shoes. Has she asked for anything specific and is there anything that I can get for her?
No, she only expresses the desire to walk, which is understandable.
When we where there she continually asked to come home, as well as asks for me everyday.
Will you give the nursing home permission to let Katrina and her children go back to visit Christie? Also can Paula and her family go to visit?
Katrina is not able to visit and Paula and her son can visit if you are there.
What’s the deal with that. Christie needs friends and visitors. Why can’t Paula and Aaron visit when I’m not there that would be more visitors more often.
When Christie was at FINR I asked if there were some youth groups from some of the local churches that might be able to go in and visit her from time to time. Just to have someone to go see her on a regular basis with adult supervision of course. Would you consider checking into something like that for her?
Christie is not at FINR any more and has improved in health. The social Director at FCC does her job well. I will be speaking with her soon in reference to Christie’s abilities to go on field trips with the other kids if the doctors think that it would be safe for her to be away from the facility. The Social Director said that Christie is becoming more social and settled which helps Christie. Christie enjoys being near the nurses station to see whats going on and wave at those who pass by.
When we where there Christie continued to ask where she was and why she was there. Doesn’t seem like she is settled to me.
In regards to the complaint against FCC,
Wasn’t a complaint it was a question. I was the one being accused of taking the missing items.
FCC had to notify me as Christie’s guardian Why not as her Dad and asked if I knew of the whereabouts claimed to be missing. The only one I felt very unsure of was the two sided quilt. I was told by phone a couple of days later that the two sided quilt was not seen arriving from FINR and had been that it had been soiled so FINR was washing it. I hope Christie’s name was on it. Yes it was. The other items are believed to be located at this time. FINR sent it to FCC along with Christie’s Nuruto dolls. She has the dolls, but no quilt.

No new information

I don't have anything to comment on as far as Christie's health. The last email I got from Richard was December 17, telling me he was glad I got to spend time with Christie. I have emailed him asking for an update or to let the nursing home update me, but as of yet haven't gotten a reply. I know there was a Christmas Party at the nursing home on Tuesday, but don't know how it went or if Richard was with Christie on Tuesday or anytime over the holiday. You would think if he where, he would call me so he could write messages for me and Christie since he won't make the nursing home provide the services that is required by law and get a TTD phone installed Christie has been there for 2 months already.

MERRY CHRISTMAS CHRISTIE

Merry Christmas all. I just got back from seeing Christie for Christmas. Mama, Daddy, Pepper, me and Xander went. We left here on Saturday and got there Saturday night. It took us 14 hours it was 775 miles.
Sunday when we got there we had to wait down stairs I guess they had to call Richard to let him know we were there, I don't know why we waited. When we went upstairs Christie was sitting at the nurses station.I tried to get a picture of her face, but the desk was in the way. She mouthed the words so plain it was as if she hollered "OH MY GOD" She was so happy.
We went to her room, and we wrote notes back and forth. We brought her a Christmas tree with fiber optic lights. Christie and Xander decorated it with a little help from me. We also went to the park. When we came back from the park we rolled passed 3 cats that where outside Christie made kissing sounds and put her hand out for the cats. We had a beautiful day.
Monday when we got there Christie was in the activities room watching Harry Potter. I brought my laptop so it would be easier for her to talk with us, she can type faster than she can write. We brought her presents and put them under the tree. Paula , Aaron and David came to visit as well. Sunday the facility called Richard to see if they could visit Monday. Richard said they could visit as long as I was there, but no one else could visit, I asked them why I had to be there Christie needed people to visit when I wasn't there, but they didn't have an answer. We all had fun laughing and catching up with Christie.
Tuesday when we got there Christie was still in bed. We talked on the laptop and I asked her did she want to go outside to the park or open her presents.Christie said that was a hard choice but she choose opening the presents.Christie opened her presents and really had fun. One of the things I took her was a scrapbook I made her with 200 pictures in it. It had like 54 pages. We spent the rest of the afternoon looking at the book together, it was so much fun. She would point to the pictures and talk to me about them she doesn't realize we can't hear what she says. At one time she leaned over and was "whispering " in my ear. If I had had it I would have given a million dollars to know what she was whispering to me. It was so much like before the wreck when we would talk. I miss talking to her and hearing her voice. Her Papa gave her a giant word find she would point to it and then herself asking if it was hers. The CNA'S came in to give her a bath and then was going to put her to bed for the night because she had been up all day so we left. When we came back Wednesday morning Christie had found 5 words in her word book she even crossed out the words she found.
Wednesday when we got there Christie was still in bed.We typed on the computer and talked. Xander wanted to play with Christie's horse, so I asked her by typing if Xander could play with it.She wrote back yes, if he doesn't break it. Christie stayed in bed until 1:00, the CNA's came in to get her ready for an appointment I ask where she was going They said they couldn't tell me and that I wasn't allowed to go with her. I called Richard at work because I wanted to know where Christie was going. The woman who answered the phone said she would have him call me. Richard didn't call me instead Philip called me and told me Richard was working and couldn't receive non emergent calls. I told Philip I wanted to know where Christie was going he said to take it up with Richard I said I couldn't because Richard wouldn't talk to me on the phone. Philip also said I would not call Richard at work again. I told him I would call him if I thought I needed to. He wasn't telling me what I could and couldn't do.Philip said if I called Richard at work again he would take the legal action he needed to ,to see that I didn't do it again. I told him to take his best shot. Christie left to go to the doctor, so we left.I called at 6:30, and she still wasn't back.I called later to see if she was back and they said yes, but didn't know what time it was when she got back. I wanted to stay the whole day with her, but we headed back home.I don't know when I will see her again.
Christie kept asking to come home for me to please, please take her home. I told her she had to get well first. She said she was. Christie doesn't understand she can't walk or talk. When they would come in to feed Christie she would open her mouth and try to get them to put the liquid in her mouth. Please keep praying for her and for her to be happy.

I'm sorry I'm not able to update you on Christie first hand however being 14 hours away from her and having to rely fully on the information from her guardian it's hard to get the facts to be able to pass on to you. I wish I was close enough to visit her everyday or at least once a week, but it's impossible to do when your working, raising a 4 year old and keep some semblance of normalcy in his life. This has been a big adjustment for him to, because he misses his sissy. I will keep you informed as I am informed. Thanks for your prayers, love and dedication.

Call before you visit

Katrina a family friend who has been visiting Christie since she was at FINR went to visit today and was asked to leave. Richard has made a list of who could visit and who can't. Katrina asked if she was on the list, they said no that Richard had specifically said Katrina couldn't visit. I wonder why. Katrina is a neuropsychologist as well as a friend who lives in Miami and was visiting weekly. When Katrina was there she would send me pictures and visit with Christie so she wasn't so lonely.Katrina would take her children to interact with Christie they would play ball and talk with Christie with the letter board. It concerns me because Christie has so few visitors and now she is limited more. Katrina and her children were such a positive influence in her recovery.

Results

Got an email from Richard, Christie failed the swallow test, she will take another one in about 3 months. I'm glad he let me know but I wish he would call instead of making me wait all day to get home and check my email.

at a stand still

Hi All,
Not much to tell you. I call everyday to see how Christie is, and as you know I get nothing from that. Richard texted me on Nov.28 to say he had seen Christie and there was no change. I texted back and said it would have been nice if he had called so he could interpret for me and Christie. He could write to her what I'm saying. The phone was left in the car to charge. If he had texted me before he left I would have called the phone in Christie's room.
Anyway tomorrow is the swallow test. Please pray Christie passes it. I know from before I was blocked of knowledge that the preliminary results will be in tomorrow. They will have a good idea if she passed. If I hear I will post as soon as I get informed.

learning to communicate

Richard sent me an email and told me that anything sent to Christie will be received by her he doesn't have to review it. He also told me the results from the hearing test. The loss of hearing in he left ear is sever and the loss in the right moderate, but that they will be fitting her for hearing aids but don't know when that will be. He also sent me the Halloween pictures of Christie but he had them developed for me so I don't have them on a CD to be able to post them. Just the same it was nice for him to do that for me. The healing process has started in more areas than one.
Please continue to pray,

still sad

I call and check on Christie, but I don't get told much. Yesterday when I called I asked them to tell Christie I loved her, she wrote back and said "Mom come take me to my room" Needless to say it broke my heart. I want to go see her, but don't know when I will be able to.
Richard is going to see her tomorrow. Richard still won't talk to me, because he don't like the comments I post on the blog.He did however send me an email, but has yet to reply to my reply.
Keep praying God is still working.

Hope Christie has a good day

Thursday the FCC is having a Thanksgiving dinner for the residents and their families. I wish I could be there with Christie but I can't. The good thing is Richard will be there or at least he is supposed to be. I hope so. I want Christie to not be alone.I hope though that they don't eat in front of Christie she can't eat and wants to, Last week she pulled her feeding tube out 4 times in 2 days. Christie says she doesn't need it.Hopefully she will pass her swallow test when ever that is (the first of December I think)and maybe by Christmas she will be able to eat.
Love you sweetie,
Mama

Just gets worse

Just to let you all know, I will update the blog as best I can. Richard has been put into place as the guardian and he has wasted no time in limiting me to Christie. When I call the facility they can tell me if Christie is O.K., but if she isn't they can only tell me she is not, but won't tell me what is wrong with her. There response to me when I call is" You have to refer your questions to the guardian. "The camera I sent to have pictures made of Christie, they will not send back to me. I can't have any pictures of her. Any mail I send to Christie will have to be seen by Richard first, they will forward it to him or wait until he visits to see it.He is however nice enough to allow me to still see her knowing I am 14 hours away. I try calling him and he won't return my calls. I called him at work this morning and he said he wrote me a letter and I should get it in a few days. I wonder why he can't talk on the phone. You would think after being with someone for 23 years they would be able to talk to me on the phone. I called him back at work and ask him what was going on why I couldn't have the pictures, he said there was a miss understanding I could have the pictures. He would have them send them to me. We will see. He told me not to call him again, he as Christie's legal father and guardian wanted to keep me updated voluntary. He said the letter would explain. I said " so you will keep me updated on a daily bases" he said No. He said he couldn't talk at work, I said will you call me when you get home he said no, then hung up on me.I guess that is some more of Philips influence because Philip told me I couldn't call his house, I guess he told Richard he couldn't call me.Funny thing is Philip talks to his ex wife where his son is concerned, but I can't talk to my ex husband about our daughter.Anyway if he stands true to his word, I will update. If not, then please keep us in your prayers.

I don't understand

I don't understand how it can take so long to go to a doctors appointment. Christie had a neurologist appointment today at 1:00 P.M. I kept calling the facility to make sure she got back O.K. Christie didn't get back to the facility until 7:40 P.M. I asked the nurse how far away was the doctors she said about 45 minutes. Why does it take that long to go and come back? The nurse couldn't give me any answers.
I sent Christie a notebook I made her with all her letters from home in it so she could reread them as she wished. I mailed it last Monday and I don't even know if she got it. I sent it priority so she should have gotten it Wednesday because the mail didn't run on Tuesday for honor of our veteran's.No one seems to be able to locate it, or to even say that Christie has received it.
I had permission from the court appointed guardian to get the evaluations of Christie when she was admitted to FCC. I didn't get them, so I called to see what was taking so long. It seems Richard has now been put in place as the guardian, and I have to have his permission to get any updates or documentation for Christie.I have tried calling him to see if he will honor his statements that he will continue to let me be apart of Christie's life as her Mama, but he hasn't returned my calls. I know Philip told me to never call any of them again, but I really thought Richard was above that.I hope they don't take this as a hostel blog, but I don't know any other way to communicate with him.
Hopefully he will read this and call, or get the facility to send me any and all information they can on my daughter's progress.

Still getting into stuff

Christie had a pretty long day. Christie had to go to the urologist for a ultra sound. While she was there she pulled out her feeding tube again. Fourth time in 2 days. They had to take her to the ER at Joe D Maggio hospital in Hollywood Fla to put in a new one. When they feed her Christie tells them no she wants to eat. I think that is why they are going to do a swallow study soon.
I also learned that she can and is playing her Nintendo DS I sent her. While she is out of bed she does activities, but when she is in bed she's not doing anything. Thanks for the ideas I need to think of things she can do in bed. Thanks for the continued prayers and that I will get to see her soon. It has been almost a month and I don't know when I will get to go again.

Ideas

Hi All,
This is a question for the readers of Christie's page. Christie gets really board when she is not in activities. I want to send her somethings to occupy her time, especially when she's in bed or when she is in her wheelchair. Do any of you have any ideas?
Thanks,
Becky
You can email me directly or post them to the comments.

At a loss

I'm kinda at a loss as to what to report. Christie is hanging in there and doing O.K. Saturday I was concerned because Christie said " She wanted to Die, and she wanted to come home" She seems to have gotten better through the day and the rest of the weekend. She continues to pull out her feeding tube, and she wants to come home. On a lighter note, Christie has been playing her Nintendo DS I got her for Christmas. She wanted it, so I sent it with her care package and the nurses say they have seen her playing it. Also near as I can tell Christie's suppose to have another swallow test and hearing test at the end of November. Details as I get them. Thanks for the continued prayers, especially with the holiday season approaching.

Still making progress

Christie is still making progress. Christie has a different brace for her left foot, because the left one kept hurting her.Evidently her foot is moving from the other braces pulling them into position. Christie also is to go for another swallow study at the end of November please pray she will pass this one. I hate for her to have to have the test done but if it will mean she can eat again it is worth it.I don't have the details, but I know speech therapy has been working with her swallowing.
The nurse was in her room feeding her and I was talking to her on the phone. The nurse got on the phone and ask me had I said something to Christie, that Christie was shaking her head NO. I laughed I said "yes" , "I told her to keep her seat belt on I didn't want her to get hurt." The nurse laughed to. Christie did get the lock for the seatbelt, so she can't take it off anymore.
Thanks for your continued prayers,
Becky

That girl just won't do..:D

I called Christie D., the nurse was in there feeding her, so I got to talk to Christie. The nurse got back on the phone and wanted to know what I had said to Christie, that Christie was shaking her head NO. I laughed and told her I had told Christie to leave her seat belt on and she was shaking her head no. That's my girl. I love you sweetie.

Behave yourself

Hey Christie D.
I love you and miss you. I called to check on you today like I do everyday several times in fact. I was told you took your seat belt to your wheel chair off and fell. They are going to do an x-ray to make sure you are O.K. They said you only slid but you slid to the foot rest of the chair. Listen to your Mama, " Don't take off your seat belt it is there to keep you safe. I know you want to get up and move, but you can't yet. With continued therapies and the Lords will, you will walk. When you say your prayers, ask God for what you want. The Bible says you have not because you ask not, so talk to God like you where taught and ask for your blessing. I Love you bunches. " I'll think of you as we watch cold case together just like we use to. I asked them to turn it on for you.
Love,
Mama

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Hi all,
Sorry I haven't written, I couldn't get on my blog page due to user error, I had blocked something in security and couldn't get on. Anyway I titled this update Halloween because Christie has always loved Halloween. I will add some pictures of Christie's past costumes.
I call everyday several times to check on Christie, nothing much to add. Richard and Angie got to visit Monday, they called and let me talk to Christie. Sharon asked when I was going to get to go see Christie again, the answer is as soon as I can. I am tapped out, due to attorneys fees and all the visits I've made thus far. As soon as I save up enough, I'll be gone again. This time, My Daddy is going to make the trip, We will have to take it slower, due to his medical condition. Daddy hasn't seen Christie since her last trip home in December. For those of you close to the family, you know what I mean when I say Daddy needs to go as soon as he can if he is going to see her. I would love to go now, but I have to be content with sending Christie care packages every week. This week I sent her new clothes for her new school, besides she needed winter clothes anyway, all she had was shorts and Capri's for summer.
Thanks for every ones prayers,
Becky

Still remembers

Christie is having a good day. She wanted to talk to me so the Facility I will call it FCC for short called me. Christie remembered I am still only a phone call away.I wish I knew what she was saying back but she got to hear me and know I was there. She got her letter from me today. It did arrive Thursday, but it was in an office somewhere, so she got her letter. The nurse said Christie did a thumbs up when she read it.

Really doing good

Christie seems to be doing good at her new "home" I call several times a day, and every time I call, she is either in activities, on her way to activities or just got back. I don't have an update on how she is doing in therapies yet, but I know she has them 3 times a week for 30-45 minutes each. Christie asks where she is, and she looks at the pictures from the wreck and seems to be understanding more, or at least remembering more. Christie remembered she is 16 that is better than when she thought she was 13.I sent her Halloween costume, but she hasn't gotten it yet, it was suppose to get there Thursday, but you know how the mail can get. That's another thing, Christie will get to dress up and take part in the Halloween festivities that the center is having.
Keep praying Christie will remain happy and in good spirits,
Becky

Missing her even more

Christie seems to be settling in, although she asks about me when she wakes up and says she wants to go home. I called to check on her today. Today was movie day. I was excited she would be going to the movies, it has been a very long time since she has gotten to do or go anywhere other than the doctors. She didn't get to go today, because Richard hasn't signed the papers for her to be permitted to go. Maybe he will soon.
Keep praying,
Becky

Doing O.K.

Christie seems to be doing O.K. I called this morning and she was going to activities. I called back this afternoon, and she was in bed, She had been in bed for about an hour. They said she was going to stay in bed for another hour, then she would get up and go to afternoon activities. I don't know what she does, I really can't get any details on what it is she does in activities..
I am sending her a Halloween costume in tomorrows mail. Christie said she wanted to be a vampire, so that is what I got her. I am also sending a disposable camera so they can take pictures for me of Christie doing everyday activities. I will post them when I get them. Unfortunately I won't be getting pictures as often as I was.

Settling In

Christie seems to be doing well settling in. She will be having physical therapies 3 times a week, She will be having occupational therapies 3 to 5 times a week. Speech will meet with her tomorrow I'll know more about that then. Some of the things she will be working on in these therapies is trying to move herself around in bed, dress herself and do things for herself. She can already wipe her face with a wet cloth, she can put chap stick on and Tuesday I saw her put her right arm in a long sleeve shirt by herself using her teeth. She will also be going to activities daily, some of those are painting, coloring, computer etc.
Madge and Dave called from Christie's room so we could talk to her again. I went down to Mama's and daddy's so they could talk to her as well. The facility put a phone in Christie's room today, so I can call and talk with her.
Thanks for your continued prayers,
Becky

nice surprise

I had a nice surprise Madge and Dave called me from Christie's room so I could talk to Christie. She said she missed me and loved me. I asked her if she wanted to watch CSI tonight, and she said yes. So they are going to turn her TV to survivor at 8:00, then CSI comes on right after. Madge and Dave are going to call back in the morning so I can tell her good morning. I'm going to go down to mama's and daddy's so they can talk to her to.
Thanks Madge and Dave

Back home, missing Christie again

Hi Everyone,
We are back from Florida. We went to see Christie Monday morning, and found out when we arrived that Christie was being moved to Miami Florida Tuesday morning at 6:00 A.M. despite all the talking and begging to not move Christie so far from everyone was to no avail. Mama and I didn't want Christie to be alone in such a transition, we arrived at the facility in Miami before Christie did.I'm glad we where there when she arrived. The first thing she wrote to us was "Why am I here, did I do something wrong" We told her no, it was just a new place for her to live for awhile.
We did get Christie's room the way she wanted it. She pointed to the places she wanted her pictures and posters and we hung them up. I did notice that a lot of her cards, all of them from the youth at church wasn't with her stuff, and some of her family pictures wasn't there either. We stayed with Christie until supper time, we didn't make it back to our room until 8:00 P.M. Christie didn't want us to leave. Christie asked are you going to leave I said yes but later today, but I'll be back soon. She mouthed how soon? I wrote, I'll be back before you know it. Christie wrote under it "Good because I would kill something to get you back" Needless to say that about killed me. I would have loved to stay longer, but we had to get back for court Wednesday.I had told the staff to watch Christie closely, she would pull out her feeding tube if left alone, I called to check on her on my way back to Port Charlotte, and sure enough, she had already pulled the feeding tube out.
I had hoped court would go better, but the judge awarded Richard guardianship. I wanted Christie here in S.C. at a facility that has a bed available, so that I could see her everyday and work with her, but the opposing side said Christie has come this far without family around her, so since Richard was the primary resident parent, in our joint custody arrangement, he was given guardianship. The opposing side, also thought I treated Christie like a baby instead of a 16 year old girl, and that they thought that would hinder her recovery, even though the 16 year old girl in question has part of her brain removed, can't walk, talk, eat or go to the bathroom on her own, she should be treated like a 16 year old. Does that make sense to anyone? Christie attorney even said Christie had indicated on 4 separate occasions she wanted to be with her Mama, that didn't help either.
The only thing I can do now is try to visit her even more so she is not alone. All the way in Miami, with her Dad back at work full time(40 hours) and not being able to drive, I don't see him visiting much, plus it is 3 1/2 hours from where he lives. Please keep praying for Christie. She needs it more now that ever, she is alone and a long way from home.I'll still update as often as I can, but with Richard as guardian, and Philip saying I can't call his house for anyone in the house I will be limited as to the information I can get.We are still praying that God will work it out so that she is closer to family.
Thanks,
Becky

Christie here I come

Hey everyone,
All is well in my little corner of the world. I'm going to go see Christie. I'm leaving in the morning. If I have Internet at the hotels, I'll try and update. if not I'll give a full report when I get home along with lots of pictures. Please continue to pray for Wednesdays court date. Pray that the best for Christie will prevail, even if it means she has to stay in Florida. i like to think God has a reason and her healing will continue to give her a better chance at life. Thank you everyone for all that you do.

Friday

Christie is doing well. Christie did very well while they did the swallow test. She cooperated with them while they did it. She still can't swallow well enough to eat on her own, she does get to try things in therapy. Christie had vanilla yogurt this morning, just a few bites. Yesterday she had ice chips, mashed up banana and honey like drink. It is a start and a long way from 6 months ago. Christie also is still doing well pointing to letters to communicate. She also has moved up to one on one care, meaning if she is in her room in bed, she won't have the mitt on she hates so much. Someone will be in there with her.
Please keep praying,
Becky

Swallow test

Hi everyone,
Christie had her swallow test today. I won't know the outcome for a few days. The therapist doesn't think it will go very well, but we will see. Expect the worst hope for the best.Friday we have our monthly meeting. I will attend by speaker phone.I will hear from all the therapist on how Christie has progressed, and I will get to ask them questions on how Christie is doing, what the future holds. etc.

Tuesday

Christie is doing well. She got her new wheel chair today. She was to have the swallow test tomorrow, but it has been moved to Thursday or Friday. They wanted time to prepare Christie for the test. It is uncomfortable but it is worth it if she can eat and drink again.

Monday

Christie is doing great. I don't really have much to update. Paula went and visited today, as well as Christie's Dad. Paula sent me new pictures, I've added some of them to the page. notice in one the bracelet Christie helped make, also her hair is long enough in the front you can't see her scar. Thanks for the prayers. I get to see her soon.

At it again

Christie is doing good. She has learned to pull the mitten off with her teeth. She got the mitten off Saturday, and then pulled the feeding tube out. It was put back in and all is well again, except she still has to wear the mitten she hates.

News with Christie

Christie is doing great. She is having a swallow study Wednesday, that will hopefully make way for the feeding tube to be gone. I don't know how long that will take, but it is a start. Also Christie will get her own wheel chair Tuesday.
Thanks for the continued prayers,

That's my Girl part 2

Hey Everyone,
My Baby Girl is doing GREAT. She says she wants to ride in a car. Christie helped Ms. Rachelle (hope I spelled it right) make a bracelet. Christie had helped her make a pillow before. Christie is wearing the bracelet she helped make. Christie also has been playing UNO, and Christie also asked for Joy Bear. When Joy Bear was brought to her, Christie smiled and Christie takes Joy Bear with her to all of her therapies. She is doing fantastic. If I haven't spoken it lately, Thank You Jesus for all you are doing in My baby girls life.

That's my Girl

Christie is doing great. I talked with a staff member and they said Christie was really doing well. Christie said "she wanted her freedom", Christie wanted to go outside, but she mouthed not with chair. Christie wanted to walk. Christie was told she needed the chair to help her for now, but that therapy was helping her to be able to walk, Christie said O.K.. Christie likes playing tic tac toe, connect four and she even helped one of the Ladies make a pillow for another patient. It has only been 5 1/2 months and Christie has far surpassed everything anyone ever thought. It takes the brain 2 years to heal. I can't wait to see the continued miracles in Christie's life. I may never know why this terrible tragedy occurred, but I know it is bound to have touched someones life. Maybe that is why.
I love you Christie,
Love Mom

Hope this touches your heart

Christie is doing well. She keeps taking off her mit and undoing the wraps on her legs. I would love to see her do it. I don't have much to add, so I will post this instead. I hope it warms your heart.

PAWPA, I BROKE MY FISHING POLE
Howard County Sheriff, Jerry Marr got a disturbing call one Saturday afternoon a few months ago. His 6-year-old grandson Mikey had been hit by a car while fishing in Greentown with his dad. The father and son were near a bridge by the Kokomo Reservoir when a woman lost control of her car, slid off the bridge and hit Mikey at a rate of about 50 mph.
Sheriff Marr had seen the results of accidents like this and feared the worst. When he got to Saint Joseph Hospital , he rushed through the emergency room to find Mikey conscious and in fairly good spirits. "Mikey, what happened?" Sheriff Marr asked. Mikey replied, "Well, Papaw, I was fis hin' with Dad, and some lady runned me over, I flew into a mud puddle, and broke my fishin' pole and I didn't get to catch no fish!" As it turned out, the impact propelled Mikey about 500 feet, over a few trees and an embankment and in the middle of a mud puddle. His only injuries were to his right femur bone which had broken in two places. Mikey had surgery to place pins in his leg. Otherwise the boy is fine. Since all the boy could talk about was that his fishing pole was broken, the Sheriff went out to Wal-Mart and bought him a new one while he was in surgery so he could have it when he came out. The next day the Sheriff sat with Mikey to keep him company in the hospital. Mikey was enjoying his new fishing pole and talked about when he could go fishing again as he cast into the trash can. ; When they were alone, Mikey, just as matter-of-factly, said, "Papaw, did you know Jesus is real?" "Well," the Sheriff replied, a little startled. "Yes, Jesus is real to all who believe in him and love him in their hearts." "No," said Mikey. "I mean Jesus is REALLY real." 'What do you mean?' asked the Sheriff. "I know he's real, cause I saw him." Said Mikey, still casting into the trash can. "You did?" said the Sheriff. ''Yep," said Mikey. "When that lady runned me over and broke my fishing pole, Jesus caught me in his arms and laid me down in the mud puddle." GIVES YOU GLORY BUMPS DOESN'T IT! GOD WILL DO THE REST I asked the Lord to bless you, as I prayed for you today, to guide you and protect y ou, as you go along your way. His love is always with you, His promises are true. And when we give Him all our cares, you know He will see us through. So when the road you're traveling on, seems difficult at best. Just remember I'm here praying, And GOD WILL DO THE REST.

Letter to Christie

Hey baby girl,
I have thought of you all day. Well all day everyday if you want the truth. I miss you so much. I just called and talked to you, but you have a hard time understanding when your not face to face or reading what is written. I know you won't get this letter, but I thought it might help me to write to you. I went to sleep thinking of you last night. I was wondering what goes on in your mind when you are alone at night in your bed. I wonder if you remember your childhood and growing up and all the things we use to do together. You loved to go swimming and you loved pic nics and walks by the water, feeding the ducks. You loved going to movies and eating pop corn. I hope you remember your life. If you don't remember it, I'm looking forward to reintroducing all of these things to you. I love you my baby girl and I really want to see you, hug you, brush you hair, I would love to get in bed and snuggle and watch a movie with you. I wonder do you remember our tea parties?Do you remember how much your mama loves you? I'm going to go for now your letter is fast becoming a novel and there are so many more things I want to tell you.
Love,
Mama

Tic Tac Toe Champion

Christie had a great day to day. She worked really hard in her therapies. She also had visitors. Paula, Aaron and Joshua went to visit. Paula and Aaron played tic tac toe with Christie and she beat them both. Aaron had her almost beat by 2 ways, but Christie beat him anyway, twice. (he he) sorry Aaron.(that's my girl.)
I got to talk to Christie today, and she mouthed words to me, and she also pushed the buttons on her machine to say "Hi" and she also said 'I love you" Christie asked Paula where her Dad was, Paula told her he was either at home or maybe in therapies. I hope Richard isn't sick and is O.K., because I don't think he has been to see Christie since the 10Th.
I wish I could go play tic tac toe or connect 4 with her. Maybe I can sooner than I think.
Keep praying, God is working.
Becky
P.S. As soon as Paula sends me pictures, I'll add them to the page.

All things come together

Christie is doing so well, she may not need the skilled medical anymore. She may move to a different building at FINR until the guardianship hearing, then she will leave FINR and either come to a facility here which is great, it's 2 miles from my house, they have speech, physical and occupational therapies or to a facility in Florida, depending on where she is going to live.
I would also like to take this time to apologize to anyone that may have been offended or hurt due to any comments made by me or anyone else who wrote anything negative on this blog. I miss Christie and miss getting to see her. She was supposed to be here for the summer, but instead, she is in Florida, where I have to drive 12 hours and spend at least 600.00 just for a couple days visit. I don't mind the drive or the money, it's just hard to come by sometimes, and I try to visit her at least every 2 weeks.Sometimes I get frustrated and loose sight of the over all picture.please continue to pray for her well being.

Randomness

I got to talk to Christie today. She is doing very well. I miss her so much. I want to see her, I miss hearing her voice when I talk to her. I have a Dogwood Tree Christie helped plant. It had a name, but can't remember what it was, so i always think of it as Christie's Dog Wood. It was covered in poison ivy, you couldn't see the tree for all the ivy. I went out today and cleaned all the poison ivy off of it.The tree is beautiful again, just like my Christie. We have a Crepe myrtle , named Myrtle, we have an Oak named Wyatt. and the dogwood named after Christie. Christie tells me she misses the fall and winter here in S.C. maybe she will be with me this season.
Please continue to pray.

Doing Well

Christie is doing really well. She has a new machine she uses to communicate with. It has prerecorded sentences and she pushes the buttons for what she wants to say. Today, she told Jose by pushing the buttons" Hi, I'm Christie I need to go to the restroom."
I talked to her yesterday, and I heard a big intake of breath, I thought it was the CNA, she said no, that it was Christie.
I really wish I was there with her. I know she is lonely. She told me the other day on the phone by the CNA that she was bored.Hopefully soon I will be able to see her everyday.
Please keep the prayers going.

P. S. David and Sharon, thank you for everything.

Nothing to tell

I have nothing new to tell, Christie is doing well in therapies. I miss her so much. I miss talking to her where she can answer back. I miss sending her cute emails that I know she would like. I miss talking to her about school and about Herman(inside between Christie and me)I try to watch movies and TV shows I know Christie likes just to have her close to me, I have FINR put the same show on for Christie, so we can "watch it together like we use to"I miss brushing her hair and snuggling with her. I just miss my Christie.
I love you my baby girl,

Long Day

Hey Everyone,
Christie had a really good day. Paula and Aaron went to visit this morning. Christie wrote back and forth with them, and had Paula call me so I could talk to her. She wrote out on the board "how is she doing" Christie also asked how her brothers were doing. Christie and Aaron also were bickering, Aaron would point to yes and Christie would point to no. The statement Aaron said was Christie was beautiful and she pointed to no and he pointed to yes. Paula said it was fun to watch. It made my day to know Christie still knows I'm still only a phone call away.

Made my Day

Hello,
Not much to tell you. I talked to Christie over the weekend, and she wrote out that she was bored. I wish I was there to spend the weekends with her. Not many people see her on the weekends and when they do, they don't stay very long.
Today Christie got measured for a wheel chair of her own. She said she wanted blue. I don't know what color blue she will get, but we will see.I also got a call today from Christie, of course someone else had to call for her, but she was the one who wanted to talk to me and to hear my voice. That really made my day to know she misses me, and even in her condition, she knows I am still only a phone call away.
Please continue to pray for my unspoken prayer.

Surprise Visit

Hi All,
Sorry I haven't up dated. I went to surprise Christie. I wanted to see her when she had to go to the hospital, but couldn't go then.I didn't want her to be there a lone, not knowing anyone, or why she was there. Christie is doing great. Christie is finally over the diarrhea, she had it for about 8 days.
I also found out Christie has PTA post traumatic amnesia. Christie thinks she is 13, that it is 2003 and she is in S.C. We had a very nice visit. She did break my heart though. She wanted me to "take her home with me" I told her she couldn't go home until she was well, that she had been in a car wreck, and that when she was better she could come home. Christie typed out on a key board, "please tell me I didn't cause this" I told her she had nothing to do with it, she was a passenger in a car and the car got hit.
Christie cried while I was there, and looked sad, but when I asked her why she was crying she said she wasn't.She did however inform me she wanted "rabbit slippers" so I went to wal mart, and could only find one kind of slippers. I guess it is still to hot for Character slippers. I got her a pair of white ones, she liked them she even posed them for a picture.
I got to see a glimpse of the old Christie, I took her picture several times out side, and she kept posing she did the peace sign, stuck out her tongue, she even tried to do the "hang loose sign" all on her own.
I also found out we have a tentative release date for Christie it could be as early as Sept.13, we are trying to find a place for her here in S.C . until she is well enough to come home. Also please remember to pray for my unspoken request.
Thanks, Becky

Back at FINR

Hey everyone,
Thanks for the prayers. Christie is back at FINR. She just had a virus. Please keep remembering my unspoken prayer request.
Love Becky and Christie

So far so good

Christie is doing much better. They are going to start her tube feedings back to day and see how she tolerates them. Her stomach is doing better, so it does still look like it was just a virus. I'll let you know more after I get an afternoon report. Thanks for the many prayers, thoughts and kind words.

One Step Back

Christie had to go to the hospital last night. She was throwing up and had diarrhea. She is at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg. They are going to keep her for a couple of days. Right now they think it is a virus, but they haven't ruled out Ileus. Ileus is a bowel obstruction. I will keep you updated. I have called 3 times today, and this is all the info I have right now. Please also remember the unspoken request.
Thanks,
Becky and Christie

Thank you.

Very good day

Christie has had a great day. Aunt Paula, Aaron and Courtney went to visit. They got to see Christie do her therapies. Christie tried to talk to them, a lot of air came out but no sound. Christie does have a blister on the back of her right foot, so she can't wear her brace. Christie did a lot of writing. Her writing is also getting much better. Christie's hair wasn't braided, so Courtney was going to braid it for her, Christie told her "no, Mom" Aunt Paula was going to cut Christie's fingernails, but Christie wouldn't let her do that either.Christie told her "no, Mom." I know it is small things, but it makes me feel good to know Christie knows I do the little things for her and she doesn't want anyone else to do it. I LOVE being the MOMMY.
Christie also beat Aunt Paula and Courtney in tic tac toe, and thumb wars. I think Courtney won 1 of the games of thumb wars. I will update new pictures as soon as Aunt Paula sends them to me.
Thanks for every ones continued prayers. Christie is proof that prayer will and does change things.

She's at it again

Christie is doing well. She keeps pulling out her feeding tube, even though the nurses put an abdomen belt on her to keep her from pulling it out. She continues to get past it and tries to pull it out anyway. The nurses put a big mitt on her hand to keep her from pulling it out. I hate they had to limit her mobility , but she has to stop pulling on the feeding tube. Christie has her sense of humor back. The other day one of the nurses told her to leave it alone , and she mouthed the words"do I have to?"
I hope God sees fit to allow her to talk again, and to eat again. I hope she will be able to do both. If God only allows one, I hope she can eat. There are other ways to communicate, but only one way to eat.
I love you Christie

MISSING HER

I talked to Christie today. Jose called me because Christie wanted to hear my voice. That makes my day. Christie asked Jose "where is my voice" Jose told her she had been in a wreck and that her voice was gone for now, but they were working on getting it back.My Christie is getting well. She use to call me before the wreck just to talk. We talked everyday at the same time.As soon as she got out of school, I would call her she would tell me how her day at school was and I would tell her about my day at work.
I can't wait to see her.
Thanks for keeping us in your prayers,
Becky

Wish I was there

I don't have much to update. Christie is doing great. She is doing well in all of her therapies, and I hear she is beating everyone at connect four. You know the checker game where you have to put four in a row before your opponent. I wish I where there to play with her.

She's Back

Yesterday Paula and Aaron went to visit Christie. They had a really great visit. They wrote to each other on the magna doodle. The one thing that was the greatest.Anyone who knows Christie knows how much she loves to pinch. Well, a picture is worth 1000 words. Sorry Aaron.
Becky

School started early for Christie

I talked to Kim, Christie's speech therapist. Kim introduced Christie to the computer, Christie maneuvered the mouse herself. Christie scored a 100% on her comprehension. She read each of the paragraphs and used the mouse to answer the question correctly. School would have started for Christie tomorrow if this terrible wreck had not occurred, I guess Christie got a head start. She took her test and scored 100%. I've been told Richard will start back to work in 2 months, If he does, then maybe Christie's insurance will continue and Christie will be able to remain at FINR for the full 2 years. What a blessing that would be for her in her recovery.

Getting better all the time

Christie is doing great. I talked to the dietitian today, and they are going to try increasing her tube feedings a little to make sure she isn't hungry. I should get a report Friday and see how that is going. Her therapies are going well. She really is doing a great job. She is a real fighter. Christie has already surpassed every ones expectations, and she is still going. I think she may be related to the energizer bunny. After all she is her mama's daughter.

God is Good

Mama and I went to see Christie. We got to see her Thursday and Friday. Mama brought her a poster of a dragon. Christie loves dragons. I brought her 3 books on CD. We thought it might help kill time when she doesn't have visitors or therapies.
Christie has improved so much. If you speak to her, she gets confused and mouths "What" Kim, the speech therapist found out if you write to Christie on a dry erase board, that she can read and understand what you wrote. Christie also surprised us all by writing back. I will post some of the pictures of her messages tomorrow as I have just got home and have a lot to do. I would ask that if anyone is in contact with Christie, please don't eat or drink or talk of food in front of her. She has written and mouthed the words that she wants food. So please be courteous to her. Thank you. Also, she got her braces for her legs. She has to wear them 24/7 unless she is getting a bath. She don't like them but I showed her pictures of her feet and explained why she needs them so now she calls them her new shoes. The nurses ask her if she is in pain so they can give her something if she is. Christie is fortunate to have such caring people that are there to help her. FINR has some of the nicest, caring staff and I thank you all for taking such good care of Christie when I can't be there.

still at it

I haven't heard to much with Christie changing, but a funny thing I did hear was that Jose her case manager went by her room and he saw Christie messing with her feeding tube again. Christie put her finger over her mouth as if to tell him not to tell on her.Jose did let the nurses know and they put an abdominal band on so she can't mess with the tube.Moral of the story, don't tell Jose your secrets. lol.

That little Rascal

I called again to check on Christie as she had pulled out her feeding tube. The X-Ray tec got there to take an X-ray to make sure it was in the right place. When the nurse turned back the cover there was Christie with the newly replaced feeding tube in her hand. She had pulled it out again. They put it back, took the X-ray all was good. When someone else came in the room and ask Christie if she had pulled out her tube she mouthed the words "no" the nurse said "You did to and I already called your Mama and told her" Christie shook her head as to say "No you didn't".
I hate she is causing more work for the staff, but I'm glad she is getting better. I love my baby girl.
Becky

A little note

Christie is doing O.K. . I called last night and talked to her. When I talked to the CNA I told her Christie could hold the phone herself if she put the phone to her left ear she could hold the phone with her right hand. After I was done talking to her I told her to give the phone back to the CNA. When the CNA got back on the phone I asked her if Christie gave her the phone back? The CNA told me no, but that she did put the phone down on her chest, and was mouthing something to her she couldn't understand.
Sunday I got a call from FINR, Christie pulled out her feeding tube. They put it back in without any problem. Christie wants to eat one day maybe she will.

Wonderful Birthday

Well, where do I begin. Christie has made so much progress, it is unbelievable. I will try and put a video clip of her blowing out her birthday candles. Not only did she blow out her candles, she can put on and take off her glasses by herself. She is mouthing sentences. She mouths some words plan as day like "My Mama, I love you, Bye, what, yes and no" as well as some others. Some times she mouths sentences we can't make out.
Christie got a new wheel chair, so she is not in the lounging one. The botox injections was started Friday and the braces for her legs have been ordered. She even took the phone away from me. She can stick her tongue out at you. In therapy, we threw the ball to each other as well.Look at the new pictures, Christie looks great.

I don't have much to update. Christie does have a urinary track infection that is being treated with antibiotics. She continues to do well in therapy and she has surprised and surpassed every ones expectations at FINR. She is a real fighter, whom I love more than life its self.
Also she turns 16 Monday the 28th. I will be with her this weekend, and will update with news and new pictures as soon as get home next week.
Thanks for the continued thoughts and prayers,
Becky

Well it has been 3 months today that Richard and Christie had their terrible wreck. It is amazing how time changes things.3 months ago this morning Richard and Christie where on their way to get a ferret, having fun, laughing, and probably discussing names for the new pet. Then in a matter of seconds both of their lives where changed forever.Everyone please be kind to each other, never let a day go by being mad or angry with a loved one , friend or relative. The one thing you can never get back or make up is time.

Christie's Birthday

If it works well for everyone, I think we should have Christie's party around 11:00 A.M. on Saturday. That way Christie or Richard won't be to tired to enjoy themselves.
Hope to see everyone there.

You've come along way baby

There use to be a cigarette commercial slogan that said" you've come long way baby" Well my baby has come along way in a short time. At the bottom and sides of this page you will see Christie washing her face and brushing her teeth. In one picture she is putting on chap stick. I love you Christie keep fighting.
Love Mama

WOOHOO

Hi all,
I got to talk to Christie today. Her speech therapist was with her, and Christie mouthed the words I LOVE YOU to me. She blew me kisses. Paula and Aaron were there for her therapies, the therapist asked Christie did she want to go to the big room for theory or stay in her room and Christie mouthed the word room. Paula is going to call me later tonight and send me pictures from today, I'll post them as soon as I get them. Thanks Paula.

Hallelujah

I called to check on Christie today and the report is she is trying to pull on her feeding tube. I don't think she pulled it out, but she is aware it is there. Christie also is mouthing words. She has been doing that for about a week but at times, some sound is made.
Keep praying my baby girl is getting better.

Friday

I don't have much to add. Christie is doing well in therapy. I have included a new picture at the bottom of the page of Christie in therapy on the tilt table, as you can tell, she doesn't like it. But what don't kill you makes you stronger, her and I are going to be the two strongest women in the world by the time this is done.

Thursday

Not much new to tell. Jose told me Richard told him that Christie mouthed the words "I Love You" to Richard. Jose did tell me they are going to fit Christie with prosthetics for her legs. They are a type of brace that will straighten Christie's feet and legs.Sorry that is all I have it is hard giving updates when you get them over the phone. Maybe I'll have better updates and pictures when I see Christie at the end of July.

Monday

I talked to Jose (the case Manager)and the therapist. They said Christie was doing really well. She is still at a level 3, she can move her right foot slightly. Just the top of her foot and her toes. She kicked a beach ball in therapy. There's not much if any movement on her left side at this time. She is beginning to mouth words, but no sound is coming out.
I miss her soooooooooo much. This is the longest that I haven't gotten to see her.
Don't forget about the yard sale, hot dogs and bake sale this Saturday the 12 th. 8:00 AM -2:00 PM at Trinity Community Church. 4018 old Buncombe Rd.
Thanks,
Becky

Thank You

Not much to tell, Christie had a good weekend. She rested from her therapies. The CNA took her outside on the porch for awhile. I called yesterday to ask them to turn Christie's TV on to a Harry Potter Marathon. They did and they said she watched all of them. The nurse thought she would go to sleep watching them, but she didn't it kept her mesmerized.
Also thanks to my friend Ann for all the beautiful frames she has made around the pictures. It makes Christie look even more beautiful.
Thanks my friend, and thanks to everyone who reads and prayes,

CT Scan

I talked to Jose today, he said they got the results back from the CT scan, and that Christie has Brain Atrophy. That means the brain is smaller, because it hasn't been used. I added the definition so so you can get the clinical meaning of it.
Cerebral atrophy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cerebral atrophy is a common feature of many of the diseases that affect the brain. Atrophy of any tissue means loss of cells. In brain tissue, atrophy describes a loss of neurons and the connections between them. Atrophy can be generalized, which means that all of the brain has shrunk; or it can be focal, affecting only a limited area of the brain and resulting in a decrease of the functions that area of the brain controls. If the cerebral hemispheres (the two lobes of the brain that form the cerebrum) are affected, conscious thought and voluntary processes may be impaired.
Hope this helps you to understand better.

Answer to Question

Christie's feet are turned under so bad, called " drop", look at the pictures and you can see it. The botox along with therapy will make her feet more pliable so they can make them straight again. then they will put soft cast on them until they are where they are supposed to be. At this point if she tried to stand, it would break her ankles.
Hope this helped. Thanks for asking. Let me know if you want more info.

Monday

Hi All,
I talked to Christie's nurse, and she is doing OK. Her right leg is swollen very bad, but they did X-rays Friday and a ultrasound today, and all is normal. No fractures or blood clots. It seems it is swollen because of her lack of use. They did a botox treatment in her feet on the 27th. It is a slow process, but hopefully there will be progress soon. Richard and I are still working on her Birthday Party and will let you know when the arrangements are final.

Paula and Aaron's Visit

Saturday Paula and Aaron went to visit Christie, She was sitting up in her chair when they got there. She was "watching" Cartoons on TV. Christie moved her head and her right arm. She would shake her head yes or no for questions that they asked her. She would even push the button if some of the answers were yes. Paula asked her if she wanted her to pinch Aaron for her, but Christie shook her head "no". Paula then asked if Christie wanted to pinch Aaron, and then Christie smiled and shook her head "yes". Aaron put his finger between her thumb and index finger, and she pinched him. There is a picture below. Paula went to the bathroom, and when she came out she saw Christie smiling as if she was up to something. Aaron was nowhere to be seen. Aaron jumped out from behind the door and scared Paula, so I guess that was what Christie was up to. She was an accomplice! They enjoyed the rest of their visit. I would like to thank Paula and Aaron for going to visit Christie, as she doesn't have many visitors, except for her daddy. He visits her daily.
Shortly after Paula and Aaron left, they removed Christie's catheter out, and she did very well with it. It didn't seem to be too uncomfortable for her, and I bet she's very glad that it's out. One more small step.

She's a fighter

I talked to Christie's nurse, and she said Christie's therapist said she did well in her therapies today. She finished her antibiotic and the X-ray shows the pneumonia is gone, so they took out her IV. Also tomorrow, they are going to take out her catheter. I can't wait to see her. She is trying really hard. No one has seen her move her left arm or hand yet, but maybe she will soon.
I want to have another hot dog, bake sale and yard sale, if anyone can help coordinate this I would appreciate it. If you have any donations for the yard sale, or if you can help with the hot dogs etc, please let me or my mom know. Thank you for all your continued thoughts and prayers.
It is really hard not getting to see her. I miss her so much. I miss talking to her on the phone. Friends and neighbors, please tell everyone you love them at least once a day, and hug them and tell them how much you love them. You never know when in a split second, a life changing thing can occur.

Thursday

Hi all,
I just talked to Jose, Christie's case manager, Christie did well in speech therapy, she got 60 % of her questions right today. They are simple questions, so she doesn't get frustrated. She had to sit up on the work out table, like you see in the picture. They increase her time a little more each day. They are trying to get her endurance up. They stretched her arms and legs and feet more. She is really doing well. She has a long way to go. Her ideal situation would be to stay at FINR for the whole 2 years, but after the insurance runs out, she will have to leave. You can stay there and private pay, but it is 1,800.00 dollars a day. Lets hope she continues to do well until that time.
I also asked about her being paralyzed on the left side of her face, she can pucker to give a kiss, so I thought she might not be paralyzed like they said. There are different levels, but she is in fact paralyzed on that side, that is one reason she can't open the left eye completely.
Thanks for reading,
Becky

Ready again

I have only been home for 1 day, and I already want to go back to see Christie. I miss her so much. Please keep praying for me, this is so hard, there aren't words to try to tell you. It is said God won't put more on you than you can bare, but i don't think I am strong enough for this. Thanks for letting me vent.

Great Visit

First of all I would like to thank the messenger that allowed God to use them in a very special way. If it weren't for you I wouldn't have gotten to go see Christie. If a picture is worth a 1000 words, you can't imagine how rich I was this weekend with Christie. You will see what I mean when you See the new pictures.
Now for the update. Christie is kinda in a coma, it is a level 3, she is in a "minimal responsive state." That means at times, she can move her head and right hand, but it is non purposeful movement.
The therapist is trying to establish communication. Christie can move her head for yes and no answers. She can push a button to a recorded message. They record yes, they ask her a question, if the answer is yes, she pushes the button, if the answer is no, she moves her hand away.
She does stretching exercises, she don't like them, because it hurts her. She has been still for over 2 months. She is doing great.
Also after I left today, she went to the ENT doctor, and they removed her Track. I wish I could have been there to see her without it.
She has her left eye open, but she can't see out of it. If you are on her left, she has to turn her head to see you. The best part of the weekend, she gave me kisses on my cheek. She puckers, and you can even hear her make the smack sound. I was so happy. I can't wait to go see her again. As soon as I get the money, I'm off again. The therapist say she seems to be more consistent when I am there. Please feel free to look at the pictures. I am adding some, and deleting some to make room.
Thanks for the prayers,
Love,
Becky & Christie

GREAT NEWS

I got to talk to Christie today. The speech therapist called and had Christie on speaker phone so she could hear me. Christie is still in a coma, but there are different levels. Christie at times can hear and respond in her own way, a blink, a thumbs up etc. Other times she doesn't do anything. Anyway, the good news is the therapist have a machine they speak words into. Then they show Christie where the yes and no buttons are. They ask Christie a question, and all by herself she pushed the button. She pushed the button to day that said "Hey Mom" if you were in Church Sunday, in the video of the father and son, it is the same kind of machine the son was using to speak.
Christie said she wanted me to come see her, so I am leaving Thursday around 1:00 P.M. I am stepping out on faith to make the trip, because I really don't have the money and I still don't have a job. I'm not to proud to say" If you can help, please do." The account at BB&T is still active, or you can make donations to the church, just ask if you need to know how.
Thanks,
Becky & Christie

Please keep praying. I miss her and really want to go back to see her.

Looking ahead

I just had a conference call with Doctor V. at FINR. Christie has high liver enzymes and they are trying to find out why. They think her liver may have been damaged in the wreck. She also has an infection somewhere, they are trying to pin point that. It may be a blood clot somewhere.
They will know more in 60 days how Christie is progressing, but as of now they know she is blind in the left eye. The left side of her face is paralyzed, the pictures of her smiling is the best we can get. The left side won't move. With the left temporal lobe gone, she will not be able to speak again. She may be able to communicate in some way, but not talking. She will reach her full potential in 2 years. What that is, we don't know. The doctor said she may never be able to do anything for herself, it depends on how she responds to therapy.
Please keep praying for us. I am so torn ,I want to be with her every minute, but I can't. Gas alone there and back is 300.00, plus lodging is extra. If any one would like to help you may make contributions to BB&T under the name of Christine Martel, or to my church, 4018 Old Buncombe Rd. Greenville S.C. 29617. If you send to the church, please indicate it is for Christie.I also need a job, please pray a door will open up soon.
Thanks,
Becky

weekend with Christie and Richard

Hello everyone,

This may be along blog, if I can remember everything from the weekend. The plane was late, so we didn't get to FINR until 7:00 P.M Friday night. We saw Richard right away, he was at the nurses station. He saw Mom and Me and got very emotional. He said " hey everyone(talking to the nurses.) This is my ex-wife, but always my best friend and my mother-in-law. Now you have met almost all of my family.
We talked with Richard for awhile, he didn't know I have been keeping up with Him and Christie the whole time, so he wanted to warn me, so I would know what to expect when I saw Christie. I told him it was OK, that I have been there, He was just asleep when I was there and didn't see me before.
Richard said he had seen Christie that day and he was upset by it, but by the end of the weekend, I think he is going to be strong for Christie and help her as she starts the progress he has made.
Christie has a throat infection because of the trach, but is normal and being treated with antibiotics. We took Christie outside in her chair(lays down like a bed) for a few minutes Sat and Sun. She is still in the coma, but we believe there are different levels. Christie can hear you when you talk to her. She smiled a lot this weekend. She is trying to communicate, I asked her was she ready to come back inside, I said if you are blink once, she did, then I said, I'm not sure you really meant yes, so if you want to go in, give me a thumbs up, she did. We came in. I accidentally took her to her Dads room, Richard had been outside with us. After I got her settled in the room I realized it was the wrong room. I said Christie, I brought you to your dad;s room by mistake, she smiled all over the place.
Richard seemed to enjoy our visit, while Christie slept, I would go for walks with Richard, Mom and I played BINGO with him in the common room. Richard seems to remember a lot, he brought up people we use to know over 20 years ago. He talked of pleasant memories that he recalled from our past, He remembered the pet names he had for Mama, he called her Mama cheese whiz, Mammaw and I can't remember the other, but he did, he remembered when I was coming to visit from day to day, he was waiting by the door Sat and Sunday when we got there. He said what took you so long, I've been waiting for you. I remember you said you would be here in the morning and if I was still asleep, you would wake me up.
He is determined to take care of Christie, If he is cold, he will go to Christie's room and turn off her fan. I told him I was glad he was there to look after Christie and take care of her, he said that WE would take care of her together and I told him yes we would.
He liked some of Christie's pictures, so I made copies, and he had me rearrange his wall of pictures. He put them where he wanted them and I taped them in place. They had been on his bulletin board, but he said he couldn't see them from his chair, so we moved them.
Christie also raised her head up several times. Paula and Aaron also came to visit Friday and Sunday. Christie seemed to enjoy their visit as well. Richard also joined us. Richard slept really well Saturday night and took 2 naps at least 2 hours each Sunday.
I'm glad Richard knows Christie is there, so now Angie and Phillip can visit her again without fear of Richard following them and finding out about Christie.
also we are looking for them to try and cap her trach this week, I call everyday for updates on Christie, but with Angie there in person, maybe she can put more current updates than I, so keep checking Richard and Christie's blog.

MOTHERS

This is a truly BEAUTIFUL piece. Please Read this at a slow pace, digesting every word and in Leisure...do not hurry... This is a treasure...
>For those lucky to still be blessed with your Mom,This is beautiful. For those of us who aren't, this is Even more beautiful. For those who are moms, you'll love this.
>The young mother set her foot on the path of life. 'Is This the long way?' she asked. And the guide said:'Yes, and the way is hard. And you will be old before you reach the end of it... But The end will be better than the beginning.'
But the young mother was happy, and she would not Believe that anything could be better than these years. So she Played with her children, and gathered flowers for Them along the way, and bathed them in the clear streams; and The sun shone on them, and the young Mother cried,'Nothing will ever be lovelier than this.'
>Then the night came, and the storm, and the path was Dark, and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother Drew them close and covered them with her mantle, and the children said, 'Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come.'
>And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and The children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary. But at all times she said to the children,' A little patience and we are there.'So the children climbed, and when they reached the top They said, 'Mother, we would not have done it without you.'
>And the mother, when she lay down at night looked up At the stars and said, 'This is a better day than the last, for my Children have learned fortitude in the face of hardness.Yesterday I gave them courage. Today, I've given them strength.'
>And the next day came strange clouds which darkened The earth, clouds of war and hate and evil, and the children groped And stumbled, and the mother said: 'Look up. Lift your eyes to the light. ' And the children looked and saw above the clouds An everlasting glory, and it guided them beyond the Darkness. And that night the Mother said, 'This is the best day of all, for I have shown my children God.'
>And the days went on, and the weeks and the months and The years, and the mother grew old and she was little and bent. But her children were tall and strong, and walked with Courage. And when the way was rough, they lifted her, For she was as light as a feather; and at last they came to a hill,And beyond they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide. And Mother said, 'I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know the end Is better than the beginning, for my children can Walk alone, and their children after them.'
>And the children said, 'You will always walk with us, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates.'And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates Closed after her. And they said: 'We cannot see her But she is with us still. A Mother like ours is more than a memory. She Is a living presence.......'
>Your Mother is always with you... She's the whisper Of the leaves as you walk down the street; she's the smell of bleach In your freshly laundered socks; she's the cool hand On your brow when you're not well. Your Mother lives Inside your laughter. And she's crystallized in every tear drop. She's the place you came from, your first home; and she's the map you follow with every step you take. She's your first love And your first heartbreak, and nothing on earth can Separate you.Not time, not space... Not even death!
>I LOVE YOU MY BABY GIRL
